Michelle and I are grateful, of course, for the personal and spiritual support he offered us from the early days of our campaign when few thought victory was possible, and for the friendship and counsel he provided ever since. We’re even more grateful for what he did for this country. From those early days of the movement to his long leadership of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, he did so much to carry us ever closer to the just, fair, inclusive, and generous America promised in our founding ideals.
