Love this. Love your moms tenacity. I can agree it’s hard being “that mom” and changing a whole school systems beliefs. I hope to be able to do as much teaching to staff as she has so rectify many of the systems flaws when it comes to educating children. That’s the kind of mom every child deserves. Beautiful!! Its funny bc your mom probably didn’t think she was doing anything extraordinary besides supporting her child. I have a 5 year old non verbal autistic son, and Im always fighting for people to treat him like any other child, his siblings. Your mom is amazing!!. I wrote a paper on selective mutism this past semester in my Masters program, I chose it because I felt no one gives it the attention it deserves and I learnt so much! It is absolutely important condition to highlight and include in discussions around I like you how I like my coffee constantly inside me mug

From another anxious kid diagnosed with selective mutism and who often felt like an outcast, I completely sympathize. I was also very fortunate to have a very supportive mom who tried everything she could to help me. Even though it didn’t magically. I had the complete opposite from my mom. I’m so happy to read that people had a good childhood with supportive parents . You are amazing and an inspiration! I am the mother of a 6 year old, 1st grader with SM. He hasn’t spoken to any grownups except for mommy and daddy for two years. He’s in therapy and has made some progress. Your story gives me so much hope. What an amazing mama. I have a child who had been diagnosed with selective mutism in seventh grade, so I completely understand where she was coming from in all of her advocacy for you. This made me get all choked up! Great parents and awesome way to show him how much you love and appreciate everything he did for you!!. What a lovely story! As a Colombian American, I can relate to the sacrifices immigrant parents make to give their children a better life. Thank you for sharing your story with all of us. I have never listened to Tish but I will know. This is could be the dictionary definition of “heart warming”. Thank you for sharing this beautiful story, and for living your life in tribute to your parents who I’m sure are so very proud of you. My parents came from Colombia too. My fondest memory is of dancing with my Dad, and Mom, in the living room to Colombian music, records that he played on a phonograph. It was always Sunday late morning, the only day he did not work. He worked two jobs
