Zealand became important to an anxious Europe on the brink of World War II and a construction boom improved my family’s fortunes. We moved into a sturdy concrete house in Bluff that my father designed and built with a sloping exterior staircase leading to a large, open porch, where my brothers and I liked to sleep in stormy weather because it was like picnic. My father at home didn’t join the war because of a heart condition, but he joined the town guard. I liked to stand guard with him on Bluff Hill, watching over Japanese submarines, the way whaling men watched their prey a hundred years ago. My father had a wooden gun at the ready; The real guns are all in the front line. When the war ended, he sent his children to school, which he never had. Story “Live from the battlefield”
